Tony Dungy on Character
"If you only coach that person on the field and you only make them a better player, you've really missed a great opportunity."

Why Character Comes First
You donât perform your way into identity. You live your way into performance. We often chase confidence, results, or success. But the real edge? It comes from knowing who you are and building everything else from that foundation.

Why this matters: In a world obsessed with results, it's easy to forget: who you are determines how you perform.
Character is the foundation of consistency. When athletes, leaders, and teams focus on who they are - their identity, values, and habits - they donât just win once. They build something that lasts.
The best leaders develop people. The best performers develop themselves.
đ So what should we know
1ïžâŁ Better People Make Better All Blacks - The New Zealand All Blacks are one of the greatest dynasties in sports and the most successful rugby team in history. But their dominance isnât just about skill, itâs about identity.
As James Kerr explains in Legacy (great read for all coaches out there), the All Blacks believe âBetter people make better All Blacks.â They instill humility, discipline, and self-responsibility before anyone steps on the field. Players sweep their own locker room, lead from example, and constantly self-assess. They know that culture isnât preached, itâs lived. Thatâs why the standard stays high, even as their rosters change.
2ïžâŁ Better Performance Comes from Identity - In Inner Excellence (AJ Brownâs viral book this past year), Jim Murphy argues that peak performance isnât just about mechanics, itâs about mastering your mind and your identity outside of performance. His philosophy centers around self-awareness: knowing who you are, how you think, and what drives you.
When youâre rooted in who you are, you can handle pressure, uncertainty, and adversity. You're not swayed by external noise because youâre anchored internally. Inner excellence builds the foundation for outer results.
đ So what can we learn from this and how can we use this?
This makes sense because when you focus on being a good person you realize that life is bigger than one performance. It gives you perspective and it lets you focus on whatâs important. It also shows you the power of knowing your purpose and your WHY. When your purpose aligns with serving others or bringing joy, it brings a higher perspective to what you are doing.
No matter what - you need to take care of yourself as a person to function at your best. This is why people want to follow leaders who develop them as people, not just as performers. So what skills should we be thinking about?
The Power of Self-Awareness - Know who you are, how you think, and what drives your behavior. Itâs the foundation of resilience and consistent performance.
Develop Character Habits - Discipline. Integrity. Humility. These are traits that compound when practiced daily, not just preached.
Set Purpose-Driven Goals - When goals are rooted in your values, motivation stays high even when results take time.
Lead with Identity First - Great leaders anchor their influence in who they are, not just what they know. Identity drives trust, and trust drives culture.
đ§ Questions to Ask Yourself and Your Team
If youâre a manager or coach: Build your team by developing people first. Start with character, identity, and how each person contributes to the collective culture.
If youâre a leader: Make identity and self-awareness part of your leadership development. Use feedback loops, values-based check-ins, and character-driven hiring.
If youâre a parent: Talk with your kids about who they are, not just what they do. Help them build confidence from within.
If youâre an athlete: Take time to know your values, your mindset, and your habits. Thatâs what sustains performance under pressure.
Final Thoughts:
Performance comes and goes. Character stays.
When you invest in identity when you know who you are and lead from that place. Everything else becomes easier.
Better people donât just perform better. They lead better. They live better.
And in the end, thatâs what really lasts.
