Bill Walsh on How to Create Results

"Concentrate on what will produce results rather than on the results, the process rather than the prize."

- Bill Walsh

Be Intentional About What You Practice

In a world that's obsessed with instant gratification and immediate results, it's easy to lose sight of the importance of the process that leads to success.

Focusing solely on the end result can often lead to frustration and disappointment, especially if the result isn't achieved as quickly as we hoped or expected. Instead, by concentrating on the process, we can ensure that we're consistently taking the necessary steps towards achieving our goals.

For example, let's say you want to improve your physical fitness and run a half-marathon. If you only focus on the end result of completing the LONG run, it's easy to become overwhelmed by the distance and the time it will take to get there. However, by focusing on the process of training and consistently putting in the effort to improve your running ability, you're much more likely to succeed.

  • Daily Goal - Stretch for at least 5 minutes every day

  • Daily Goal - Walk for at least 20 minutes every day

  • Weekly Goal - Start with 15 miles total per week and increase 2 miles every week

Jerry Rice was the best wide receiver in the NFL for over 15 years, and he was always intentional about what he would practice.

  • He simulated the exact routes that he would run during a game.

  • He practiced jump balls at game speed.

  • He worked at his craft every day with incline running, lifting, and sprints.

Being intentional about what you practice, and focusing and concentrating on the process rather than the prize is essential for long-term success and fulfillment. Whether it's in our personal or professional lives, by consistently taking action towards our goals and focusing on the process, we'll be well-positioned to achieve the results we desire.

The ONE Thing

The One Thing principle is the concept of focusing on the one most important task or activity that will have the biggest impact on achieving your goal. It comes from the book, "The One Thing" by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan.

By identifying and prioritizing this one thing, and making it the primary focus of your time and energy, you can achieve extraordinary results and avoid distractions and busyness that often get in the way of success.

What’s the ONE Thing I can do [goal] [time frame], such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?

  • What's the one thing I can do to achieve my goal in half the time?

  • What's the one thing I can do to improve my health and well-being?

  • What's the one thing I can do to improve my relationships with my family and friends?

By asking this question, it helps you to:

  • Focus your energy on the most critical task or goal

  • Avoid distractions

  • Increase productivity

It cuts to the heart of what you should prioritize versus everything else by focusing on the one thing that will have the most significant impact. Focus on the One Thing that matters most, and watch as the trivial others fall away - it's the ultimate hack for achieving extraordinary results!

Be Intentional About What You Practice

Below is a great video of Kobe Bryant explaining the importance of practice and the way he thought about team building, culture building, and skill building with his teams. Listen to his voice and the intentionality of going through drills, the words he used, and how he worked with his team to attack one simple practice.
