Paulo Coehlo’s Thoughts on Your Mindset

"Don’t allow your mind to tell your heart what to do. The mind gives up easily."

- Paulo Coelho

Why Mindfulness is Important

What to know: Mindfulness allows you to improve your focus, reduce your stress, and be more resilient because you are better able to observe your thoughts and emotions without judgment. This gives yourself a fresh perspective on your self-limiting beliefs.

Mindfulness starts with the concept of “Be Here Now.” By focusing on the present moment, you no longer worry about the past or have anxiety about the future. You remove your self-talk and ego from questioning yourself. Just because you have a thought doesn’t mean you have to believe it.

As you dive deeper into mindfulness, you discover your mind, its thought pattern habits. By quieting your mind, you start to foster self-compassion and a mindset of growth because you learn about yourself. Mindfulness has many benefits:

  1. Improves Self-Awareness: Mindfulness empowers you to understand your thought patterns and emotional responses better.

  2. Reduces Stress : By staying present, you can reduce stress and anxiety, fostering a sense of calm and tranquility.

  3. Improves Focus: Enhance your concentration and productivity by training your mind to stay in the present moment.

  4. Enhances Emotional Regulation: Mindfulness helps you manage emotions, preventing impulsive reactions.

  5. Improves Resilience: Develop the ability to bounce back from challenges and setbacks with greater strength and grace.

  6. Increases Empathy: Cultivate compassion and understanding for yourself and others.

  7. Leads to Better Decision-Making: Clarity of mind allows you to make wiser and more deliberate choices.

  8. Improves Health: Studies show that mindfulness can improve sleep, immune function, and overall well-being.

What Daily Mindfulness Can Look Like

  1. Sports - Steve Kerr and the Golden State Warriors

Mindfulness is one of 4 core values for the Golden State Warriors. Coach Steve Kerr utilizes mindfulness with the Golden State Warriors by recognizing its value in enhancing present-moment awareness and entering the "zone" to improve performance. He talks about how you need to “Stay in the moment. Focus on the process. Be grateful for the opportunity.” While he and his coaching staff might not lead the team through formal mindfulness practices like yoga or meditation (Coach Phil Jackson did both with the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s), the focus on being present remains essential for the team’s performance.

  2. Schools - Wilson Elementary and Mindful Music Moments

Schools are increasingly incorporating mindfulness instruction to enhance students' social-emotional skills, reduce stress, and create a positive classroom environment. Mindfulness practice involves focusing on the present moment and can include activities like observing surroundings, bodily sensations, and deep breathing. The aim is to help students feel more regulated, focused, and prepared for learning.

Wilson Elementary School in Madison, Wisconsin has implemented a program called "Mindful Music Moments" where students start their day by listening to a piece of classical music and engaging in a moment of mindfulness. This practice helps students focus, set positive intentions for the day, and create a calm classroom atmosphere conducive to learning. The school also has mindfulness workshops for teachers to enhance their own well-being and ability to integrate mindfulness techniques into their lessons.

  3. Life - The Power of Mindful Walking

In a NY Times article, Nature writer Barry Lopez emphasizes the importance of walking as a way to connect with the world on a deeper level. He suggests that walking should be about what the experience can extract from us, rather than what we can gain from it. By being attentive and shedding assumptions, walking becomes a discipline and an art that helps us see and experience the world in a more intimate way. Walking, he argues, is a gift that allows us to stop thinking and start paying attention to the world around us, leading to a more profound and delightful connection with our surroundings.

    Takeaways:

    • Mindfulness means being present and in the moment. By being present, you can think clearer, focus better, perform better, and be more self-aware.

    • A mindfulness habit looks different to everyone, whether it is walking in nature, listening to music, meditating, relaxing in the pool, or “getting in the zone.” The benefit is that by focusing on the present moment, you are learning how to focus and eliminate distractions.

    • Mindfulness is a daily habit only when you make it a habit. Think about what mindfulness practice would work best for you and when you want to schedule it.
