Pat Riley’s Thought on Failure
"If you’re afraid to fail, then you’re probably going to fail."
- Pat Riley
Why Growth Only Happens When You “Fail”
Failing is not a sign of weakness; it's a sign of bravery.
True growth only happens when you can learn from your mistakes. You then have the opportunity to learn, improve, and grow.
But when you're afraid to fail, you become paralyzed. You're too scared to take risks, to try new things, to put yourself out there. And when that happens, you're not living life to the fullest. You're not pushing yourself to your limits, and you're not growing.
On the other hand, when you do fail, it's a learning opportunity. It's a chance to reflect on what went wrong and figure out how to do better next time. It takes courage to put yourself out there, to take risks, and to try new things. And when you do fail, it's a sign that you're pushing yourself, that you're growing, and that you're not afraid to take chances.
So why is the fear of failing worse than failing itself? Because the fear of failing leaves you stuck. It keeps you from trying new things, from taking risks, and from pursuing your dreams. And when you're stuck, you're not living life to the fullest.
Now, I know that the idea of failing can be scary, but here's the thing: failure is inevitable. No one goes through life without failing at something. It's a part of the journey, and it's something that you can use to your advantage.
So how do you overcome the fear of failing? It's simple, really. You just have to embrace it. Embrace the possibility of failing, and embrace the learning that comes with it. When you do, you'll start to take more risks, try new things, and pursue your dreams. And when you do that, you'll start to live life to the fullest.
Fear of failing is what holds us back and keeps us from living life to the fullest. Embrace it, use it to your advantage, and have fun with it.
How to do fear-setting
Fear setting helps you to identify and confront your fears and the potential obstacles that may be holding you back.
Think through the worst-case scenario
Think through the steps to mitigate risk
Below is a summarized version of Tim Ferris' fear-setting exercise which is a great exercise for overcoming fears.
Step 1 - Put your fears under the microscope
Define: List out everything you fear about the idea of taking action
Prevent: List ways you could reduce the likelihood of each of the worst-case scenarios from happening
Repair: List the ways you could repair the damage if worse came to worst.
Step 2 - Consider the Potential Benefits of Taking Action - Write down all the positive benefits of even an attempt or partial success at taking action.
Step 3 - Consider The Consequences of Inaction - consider all the consequences on inaction including financial, emotional, and physical at each time on the horizon. Be detailed, this step is equally as important as the others but often forgotten in decision-making.
By facing and overcoming your fears, you gain confidence and resilience, and you can more easily take action towards our goals. Fear setting helps you to eliminate indecision and procrastination by providing a clear roadmap for taking action, and it can help to reduce the feelings of overwhelm and anxiety that often accompany uncertain or challenging situations.
