Nelson Mandela on Resilience

"Do not judge me by my success, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again."

- Nelson Mandela

Why Resilience is the Backbone of Our Society

Resilience is your foundation for growth. It is your ability to persevere through adversity and your capacity to bounce back from setbacks. It builds character, cultivates courage, and unlocks the potential for greatness in every area of our lives, making it a skill worth mastering for a life of purpose and fulfillment. Anything you’ve accomplished, you did through exhibiting some form of resilience.

The most resilient people don’t get lucky, they cultivate resilience over time. It's a skill you can build over time using:

  • Optimism

  • Growth Mindset

  • Acceptance

  • Hard Work

  • Consistency

  • Patience

We all need to build a system that makes resilience inevitable for ourselves, our families, and our friends.

Coach K’s 4 Resilience Principles

  1. Attitude - It is on you to have a good attitude

    • Positive anything is better than negative nothing

    • Your attitude is a choice

    • What you think you can do is what will will happen

Lesson: Your attitude defines your mindset, the difference between "Why me?" and "Why not me?"

  2. Belief - Belief is contagious

Coach K always talked about believing in yourself and your team. He would ask - Do you believe that you can figure it out?

"I've always believed that if you put in the work, the results will come."

    - Coach K

Lesson: If you don't believe you can then you won't.

  3. Preparation - Show up and do the work

    • What did you learn from your setbacks?

    • How can you change that?

    • How will it be different this time?

Lesson: Learn from your mistakes. The strength of the team lies in its preparation.

  4. Execution - Success isn’t random

"You can have the best game plan in the world, but if you don't execute, it doesn't matter. Success is not a random act." - Coach K

    • Have a clear plan

    • Communicate the plan

    • Hold everyone accountable

Lesson: Be detailed and execute with purpose. Execution is everything.
