Jon Gordon on Visualization

"The key to visualization is to create a detailed image of what you want to achieve and then immerse yourself in that image as if it’s already a reality."

- Jon Gordon, motivational speaker and coach

Why Visualization Can Change Everything for You

Visualization is a powerful tool that can help us achieve our goals by allowing us to create a clear mental image of what we want to achieve. When we visualize our future, we are effectively training our minds to focus on the positive and to work towards achieving our goals.

The first step in visualization is to clearly define what it is that we want to achieve. This could be anything from getting a promotion at work to running a marathon. Once we have a clear idea of what we want to achieve, we can then begin to create a detailed image of what that success would look like. This could involve imagining ourselves in a specific setting, surrounded by people who are supporting us and congratulating us on our success.

The next step is to immerse ourselves in that image as if it's already a reality. This means using all of our senses to experience the moment as if it's happening right now. By doing this, we are sending a powerful message to our subconscious minds that this success is not only possible, but it's already happening.

Visualization is a powerful tool that can help us to stay motivated and focused on our goals. By creating a detailed mental image of our desired outcome and immersing ourselves in that image as if it's already a reality, we are training our minds to focus on the positive and to work towards achieving our goals. With practice and persistence, you'll be amazed at how quickly you can turn your dreams into a reality

How to Visualize (and Get) What You Want

The WOOP technique is a foundational visualization method that helps you to self-regulate your dreams with present reality.

You reflect on what you want while planning for the challenges that will arise. You visualize your future and take action on your goals. The "overly positive" person believes only positivity will help you achieve your goals, but that isn’t how life works. Just thinking positively isn’t enough because there will always be challenges.

WOOP helps you visualize positive outcomes grounded in realistic situations.

The WOOP technique grounds your positive thoughts into realistic situations to overcome challenges. It involves 4 key steps:

1. WISH - Define your goal

2. OUTCOME - Visualize the Outcome

3. OBSTACLE - Visualize the Obstacle(s)

4. PLAN - Create a plan

STEP 1 - Wish

Think about something in your life you want to work toward: your career, schoolwork, relationships, or anything personal. It should be challenging, realistic, and attainable. Make sure your wish is specific, and write it down.

STEP 2 - Visualize that Outcome

Visualize and think about what it would look like and feel like to reach your goal. Spend a few minutes using your 5 senses to deeply imagine attaining that outcome. Think about what it would look and feel like to have your goal fulfilled.

STEP 3 - Visualize the Obstacles

This is a key step in making your dreams realistic. Don’t just imagine the great outcome, visualize what may stop you from reaching that outcome. Ask yourself:

• What would it feel like to encounter these obstacles?

• What can I control?

STEP 4 - Create a Plan

Use the sentence structure below to list all of your obstacles and create a plan:

WHEN I run into (obstacle), then I will (plan).

Summary

This creates a mental program when you face your challenges. It doesn't give your mind a chance to intervene. WOOP is a powerful framework for visualizing anything in life.

The best entrepreneurs, athletes, and thinkers have leveraged this technique—whether they know it or not! Their genius: the ability to overcome obstacles and visualize their future before it happens.

It's easy to visualize just the positive—we all know people who try to do this. But don't be fooled--overcoming obstacles is what makes you resilient along the journey.

Be better. Use WOOP. Find beauty in simplicity!
