Jim Rohn’s Thought on Your Inner Circle

"You are the average of the five people that you spend the most time with."

- Jim Rohn

Why Your Inner Circle Is Important

Our interactions with others greatly impact your perceptions, thoughts, and ultimately it can affect your actions. The choice of who you surround yourself with becomes one of the most important decisions that you make on a daily basis and it’s not just the choice of your friends and partners. It is why your parents always told you to choose your friends wisely.

The individuals in your inner circle play a crucial role in shaping our mindset and perspective because where your focus goes, will expand. When you surround yourself with positive, supportive individuals who believe in you then you are more likely to adopt their optimistic outlook on life. Their encouragement pushes you to achieve more than we thought possible. Conversely, when you spend time with negative or toxic people that drain your energy, you will feel the effects. They can instill self-doubt, hinder our personal growth, and even leave us depressed. It becomes essential to choose our friends and companions wisely, seeking those who uplift, inspire, and challenge us to be our best selves.

In today's interconnected world, it is not only your immediate social circle that affects you. The content you consume, such as books, articles, podcasts, and social media, has a significant impact on your thoughts and emotions. Just as spending time with positive people influences you positively, consuming uplifting and educational content helps us expand our horizons, foster personal development, and challenge our limiting beliefs. On the other hand, constantly engaging with negative or harmful content can shape a pessimistic worldview, breed self-doubt, and limit your potential.

Takeaway: Be intentional about who you let into your inner circle. Think about the people that lift your spirits or drain your energy. Questions to ask when thinking about your inner circle:

  1. Who are the five people you currently spend the most time with? Reflect on how their influence might be shaping your thoughts, emotions, feelings, and actions.

  2. How do the individuals in your inner circle support and fight for you? In what ways do they make you believe in more than just yourself?

  3. Who are people that drain your energy and always leave you feeling negative?

  4. What does the content (social media, articles, podcasts) say about your mindset?
